CBI Exposes 8.50 Lakh Accounts in Major Money Mule Scam: Check Out How to Stay Protected

In a shocking turn of events, the CBI (India’s leading agency – Central Bureau of Investigation) has detected a whopping 8.50 lakh mule bank accounts in over 700 branches across the country, being used by cyber criminals to transfer proceeds from money scams involving digital theft, impersonation, fraudulent investments and UPI-based frauds. This has been recently discovered after an enquiry was conducted by the agency.

The central agency’s crackdown on these ‘mule accounts’, a concept that is widely prevalent but not known to many; were opened using fake IDs for the limited use of taking money illegally from victims.

This eye-opening incident came into limelight through a coordinated search operation recently carried out at 42 locations across Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh during which nine suspects were taken into custody as well. Those taken into custody include alleged middlemen, agents, aggregators, account holders, and banking correspondents – all believed to be an integral part in planning and facilitating the opening of these fictitious accounts.

What is a mule account?

A mule account opened in the name of an individual who may or may not be aware that the account is used to launder illicit money. The CBI has found that these mule accounts were established using falsified identification documents and primarily used as catalysts for siphoning funds from unsuspecting victims.

Some money mules know they are assisting with criminal activity, but others are unaware that their actions are helping fraudsters. Money mules may be recruited through an online job ad or social media post that promises easy money for little effort.

The searches came after a new CBI FIR was necessitated after the agency’s findings during an enquiry. Through this search, CBI also unearthed the architecture of this money- laundering process and the current deficiencies in banking institutions with respect to their safety measures.

The agency said its enquiry uncovered systemic lapses with some banks neglecting to dispatch acknowledgement or confirmation letters, a routine measure to verify the authenticity of a customer’s address. The CBI also found violations of guidelines issued vide the RBI master circular and certain internal guidelines issued by the banks.

  • Be cautious of unsolicited offers involving money transfers – one must be extra wary of offers that sound too good to be true or promise easy money.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi or unsecured websites when handling sensitive information.
  • Always verify the legitimacy of any job or financial offer, especially those involving overseas or remote work.
  • If you suspect you’ve been targeted, immediately contact your bank and relevant authorities.
  • Do not share your personal details and credentials with anybody, not even people claiming to be relatives, professionals or banking personnel.
  • Enable transaction alerts to promptly identify any suspicious activity and review your account statements at regular intervals for any unauthorized transactions to be reported.
  • Don’t open a bank account or cryptocurrency account at someone else’s direction.
