The evolution of digital technology has revolutionized how we handle transportation and financial services in India. One of the most notable innovations in recent years is FASTag – India’s premium instrument, a one of its kind unique toll collection systems that has been designed for your travel on the national and state highways of India.
This RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology enabled sticker tag automatically deducts toll charges from a prepaid account linked to the vehicle. As of December 2024, there are over 10.5 crores active FASTag users, according to the data released by NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India).
The FASTag fintech system is maintained and regulated by the NHAI (National Highway Authority of India). However, starting August 15, 2025, private vehicle owners in India can opt for a FASTag-based annual toll pass allowing unlimited access across National Highway toll plazas. The pass is available for INR 3000 and will a one-year validity from the date of issue. This new pass will simplify toll payments, relax the heavy congestion and reduce friction at toll booths nationwide. Currently, FASTag as a mechanism is operational at over 750 toll plazas, including all National Highways and over 100 state highways in India.

Almost all major private and public sector banks in India now issue FASTag for your vehicle, through an online application process. The details must be linked to your Aadhar for proper KYC approval. FASTag is operated through a network of partner banks authorized by the Indian government and NHAI. The recharge and payments can be made through your bank account itself, with the UPI (Unified Payment Interface) system available for all banks, through different UPI apps. This is being monitored by the NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India). NPCI ensures the interoperability of FASTag across all participating banks and toll booths, thereby creating a unified and bank-integrated framework.
Popular Banks Issuing FASTag:
- HDFC Bank
- ICICI Bank
- SBI
- Axis Bank
- Paytm Payments Bank
- Kotak Mahindra Bank
- Bank of Baroda, and more.
FASTag Issue Process:
- A user can approach a bank—either through its website, mobile app, or branch—to request a FASTag.
- Upon registration, the bank verifies KYC documents and links the FASTag with the customer’s bank account or prepaid wallet.
- Once the account is activated, the vehicle owner can recharge or connect through auto-debit for hassle free travel on highways.

How Does FASTag Work?
FASTag accounts are connected to either a savings/current account or a digital wallet of the individual. When a tagged vehicle passes a toll booth, the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system communicates with the bank’s backend system to deduct the toll charge in real-time.
This seamless fund transfer is made possible by the bank’s payment infrastructure gateway. Banks also offer customer support for FASTag-related issues such as recharge problems, balance mismatch, or incorrect deductions.
How to Recharge & Top-Up
Banks provide multiple channels to recharge FASTag accounts:
- UPI
- Internet Banking
- Credit/Debit Cards
- Mobile Wallets
- Auto-debit from linked bank accounts
Types of FASTag Bank Accounts
FASTag can be linked in two major ways, which determines how the related banking is involved:
- a) Prepaid Wallet FASTag
The first type is the prepaid wallet system. In this model, the FASTag is linked to a digital wallet provided by the issuing bank. Users must top up the wallet manually and toll charges are deducted from the wallet balance.
- b) Direct Bank-Linked FASTag
In this scenario, FASTag is connected directly to the customer’s savings or current bank account. Toll charges are automatically deducted, similar to how a debit card transaction works. This provides greater ease for frequent travellers who don’t want the hassle of frequent recharges.
Benefits of Bank-Linked FASTag for Customers
- It allows for seamless travel. There is no requirement to wait in long queues or cash payments at toll booths, which are much higher than FASTag enabled charges.
- Many banks offer cashback or discounts on toll transactions, helping you save more money.
- Users get SMS/email alerts for every toll deduction – so the expenses can be tracked and monitored on a regular basis.
- Banks integrate FASTag services into their mobile banking apps, making management easy. All the services can be made use of through a single portal itself.
- FASTag is now accepted for parking payments, fuel stations, at mall parking and state highways, thanks to bank-enabled interoperability. This cross-usage has widely promoted digital development, cashless transactions and fintech advancements.
The integration of banking with FASTag has generated in a new era of convenience, efficiency, and digital transformation in India’s transport and finance sectors. By automating toll payments and linking them with respective bank accounts, the system has streamlined highway travel while promoting the broader goals of financial elevation and a cashless economy.
As the country continues to invest in smart infrastructure and fintech innovation, the synergy between banking and FASTag is set to expand into more sectors thus fueling India’s journey towards becoming a fully indigenously digitized economy.
